Joe Grist Coding & Creative

Logos, Brochures, Sales Support, Collateral...

My focus is on creating great design. What do I mean by great design? It is to use design thinking and skills to create the best solution for a real-world need.

  • A design that says what you need it to say
  • A design that works in all your desired situations and media types
  • A design that you like
  • A design process that suits your budget and project or business size

Some examples of work I like to do…

  • Company logos
  • "Look and feel" website or computer systems
  • Business cards and stationery
  • Fliers and Posters

Case Study

I recently did a rebrand for a small local business in the natural therapy industry. From a quick list of requirements sent via instant messaging, a set of 4 or 5 sample logos were developed over a couple of weeks and returned to the client. The client decided which version they liked, and chose to add a different font. I worked with the customer to change the design to match what they wanted exactly, ensuring legibility and suitability for print media and signage.

Cartoons, T‑Shirts, Posters...

I am a keen illustrator and enjoy drawing for fun. I like to work in different styles, although recently I have been focussing on action comic style inking.

  • Detailed vector-style product illustrations
  • Vector style or flat-look diagrams and art
  • Line art either freehand or pixel-perfect vectors
  • Comic book style art
  • Infographics and diagrams

Case Study

I regularly work on logos and T-Shirts for strongman competitions. There is a lot of red and black, and things like weights and skulls! The artwork needs to work well with DTG garment printers. I work with the organisers to build a suitably dramatic concept, and they generally get accepted very well and the competitors wear them until they wear out.

Web, Mobile, Blockchain...

I have worked in software development for a number of years, in a number of capacities, for Federal, State, small and large private businesses.

Here are some technologies I have worked with recently...

  • Swift
  • Kotlin
  • TypeScript / JavaScript
  • Angular
  • React
  • Wordpress
  • PHP
  • SQL
  • Solidity

Recently I have been working on Blockchain software services with Kiwi’s Crazy Labs. We’re working on a whole lot of different Ethereum projects.

  • NFTs
  • ERC20 Token Launches
  • Uniswap integrations
  • Smart Contract development
  • Smart Contract code reviews

Case Study

Recently I worked with a government department who had a large GIS project, with an Angular and React front-end. The front end was incomplete, and having been evolved over time by different actors, required extensive cleanup. The project needed and injection of architecture, programming best practices, and tests. The existing code and requirements were reviewed, and a plan was developed that covered visual design, accessibility, and feature completion. The plan was successfully executed, allowing the department to continue to progress their project at a business level with their stakeholders.

Nature and Abandoned Places

I am a keen photographer. While I do not have the greatest gear to work with, I am getting some exceptional results. My photographic art centres on:

  • Lost and abandoned places
  • Rust and weathering
  • Underground exploration
  • The natural world
  • The unexpected everyday

I’m working on a coffee table book which I hope to release soon, focussing on little known places of beauty and abandonment in lutruwita/Tasmania.
